Nederland op zijn mooist. De achttiende-eeuwse Republiek in kaart en beeld biedt in meer dan duizend kaarten, stadsplattegronden, stadsgezichten, dorpsgezichten, stadhuizen, kerken, kloosters en abdijen, kastelen en buitenplaatsen, poorten en marktpleinen een bijna alomvattend beeld van het Nederlandse landschap in de achttiende eeuw. Een ‘Grand Tour’ door de Republiek der Verenigde Nederlanden, van Amsterdam tot Groningen en van Middelburg tot Maastricht. Het beeld dat oprijst is deels vertrouwd en heel herkenbaar, deels onbekend en bevreemdend. Veel van wat er op de prenten is te zien, is later afgebroken, verbouwd of vervangen, maar minstens evenveel is tot op de dag van vandaag bewaard gebleven. Centraal in deze monumentale publicatie staat de door Isaak Tirion uitgegeven 23-delige boekenreeks Tegenwoordige Staat der Nederlanden, de meest omvangrijke historisch-topografische beschrijving van de Republiek die tussen 1738 en 1803 verscheen. Tirion vulde de rijk geïllustreerde Tegenwoordige Staat aan met de 9-delige boekenreeks Het Verheerlijkt Nederland, dat nog eens honderden extra afbeeldingen bevat. Voor het eerst wordt het gehele beeld- en kaartmateriaal van Tirions uitgaveproject in één groot overzichtswerk samengebracht. Het inleidende deel beschrijft het leven en werk van uitgever Tirion en gaat nader in op de kunstenaars (tekenaars, graveurs en cartografen) die hij bij zijn project betrok. Zij reisden door het hele land om zoveel mogelijk bezienswaardigheden ‘naar het leven’ te tekenen. De ter plaatse gemaakte schetsen werkten zij later in het atelier uit. Samen schetsen de illustraties een opmerkelijk beeld van de Republiek: een vruchtbaar, vredig en uitzonderlijk welvarend land met een rijke historie.
