Le volume des Documents diplomatiques français du premier semestre 1946 couvre une période particulièrement riche: la session du Conseil des ministres des Affaires étrangères des Quatre à Paris, toute une série de développements très importants et même décisifs en Indochine et au Levant, la rupture du système de réparations allemandes quadripartite mise en place à Potsdam et le début du processus de division de l''ancien Reich, l''évolution de la position française envers l''Allemagne, marquée par de profondes divisions au sein du Gouvernement provisoire après le départ du général de Gaulle le 21 janvier, le développement des projets français concernant la Sarre, la crise franco-espagnole. En même temps la crise iranienne, l''évolution de la situation en Europe orientale, l''évidence des ambitions soviétiques, y compris vers le Moyen-Orient, certaines réactions américaines font comprendre de plus en plus nettement aux responsables de la diplomatie française que l''on se dirige vers des tensions croissantes entre anciens alliés. Paris souhaite contribuer à éviter la rupture et se garde bien de choisir entre Washington et Moscou. En même temps la mission de Léon Blum aux États-Unis et de discrètes évolutions à propos de la question allemande montrent bien qu''en profondeur l''Amérique apparaît de plus en plus à beaucoup de responsables comme un partenaire essentiel. Bien entendu ces différents sujets n''épuisent pas l''intérêt du volume: on notera en particulier de nombreux documents concernant l''Italie – à propos de laquelle les Alliés et en particulier la France préparent activement les clauses du futur traité de paix –, l''Amérique Latine qui fait l''objet d''un véritable «plan d''action», les questions économiques internationales.
