L'activité pétrolière en France a déjà plus de 150 ans d'existence. Des premières importations d'or noir jusqu'à la structuration des foyers actuels de son industrie à la veille de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, c'est à la découverte de cette histoire à la fois technique, économique et politique que nous convie l'auteur. En France, la Vallée de la Seine est aujourd'hui l'un des principaux foyers de cette industrie, tant en terme de production que de concentration de ses établissements. Elle est surtout une région pionnière à plus d'un titre dans le développement du pétrole, secteur dont les débuts demeurent méconnus. Prenant en compte l'ensemble des acteurs locaux, nationaux et supranationaux, il analyse le processus d'industrialisation d'un territoire si proche de la région parisienne, par une activité qui va devenir à la fois stratégique et sensible pour son environnement. Des références constantes à d'autres « régions pétrolières », en France comme dans d'autres pays, replacent cette histoire dans un cadre géographique bien plus vaste que la seule Normandie, révélant ainsi un secteur économique qui s'avère déjà « mondialisé ».
