L'Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques de l'Institut de France a décerné le Prix Jean Sainteny 2010 à cet ouvrage De la fin de l'Empire colonial en 1946, à la fermeture du Centre d'Expérimentations du Pacifique (CEP) en 1996 et à l'Accord de Nouméa en 1998, la France n'a cessé de recomposer - souvent par à-coups - sa politique avec ses territoires du Pacifique Sud, ce qui n'a pas manqué d'attirer l'attention et les critiques, parfois violentes, des États et des territoires de la région. La définition et l'articulation des politiques intérieure et extérieure de la France dans le Pacifique Sud sont au coeur du présent ouvrage et posent la question des enjeux nationaux, régionaux et internationaux dont furent investies les îles françaises. Ainsi, l'implantation du CEP en Polynésie française, noyau de la politique de puissance et d'indépendance nationale de la France, a constitué un sujet de fort ressentiment des Océaniens à l'encontre de la France. Ce rejet du nucléaire a peu à peu conduit à la remise en cause de la présence territoriale de la France dans la région, d'autant que la revendication d'indépendance faisait basculer la Nouvelle-Calédonie dans la violence, au cours des années 1980. Parallèlement, durant les quarante années pendant lesquelles ont eu lieu les essais atomiques, Paris n'a pas perçu ses îles océaniennes comme des entités particulières mais les a davantage administrées comme les maillons d'un même Archipel, au service de ses ambitions de puissance.
