In de vernieuwde jubileumeditie zijn alle illustraties gescreend, waar nodig vervangen, en vooral: een groot aantal is van zwart-wit naar kleur gegaan. En de prijs klapt naar beneden van 75 euro naar € 59,50. Als dat geen jubileumfeestje is! Jonathan Israel (1946) is emeritus-hoogleraar moderne Europese geschiedenis aan het Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, VS. Hij was eerder hoogleraar Nederlandse geschiedenis en instituties aan de Universiteit van Londen. Van zijn hand verschenen naast zijn meesterwerk over de Republiek een indrukwekkende trilogie over de Verlichting, en boeken over de Franse en Amerikaanse revoluties, Revolutionaire ideeën (2017) en Lopend vuur (2020).
