Nederland heeft een van de oudste grondwetten van de wereld en al meer dan twee eeuwen een stabiel constitutioneel bestel. De spelregels ervan zijn wezenlijk voor hoe we samen vorm geven aan ons lot, maar toch zijn ze weinig bekende, soms haast onzichtbare decorstukken voor ons statelijke, politieke, juridische en ook alledaagse samenleven. Wim Voermans probeert die vaak lastig te doorgronden regels van ons oude Nederlandse constitutionele bestel tot leven te wekken door, voorbij de mist van juridische techniek en jargon, naar hun achtergrond te kijken. Je gaat die regels – deels vervat in de Grondwet, deels in ongeschreven constitutioneel recht – namelijk beter begrijpen als je weet op welke vraagstukken ze een antwoord (probeerden te) geven. Onze constitutie reist daarvoor langs de Republiek, het Koninkrijk en de geboorte van de moderne (rechts)staat en democratie in een poging de deur van onze constitutie te openen voor iedereen: leken, liefhebbers, studenten staatsrecht en deskundigen, professionals en amateurs. Op een manier en in een taal die iedereen er toegang toe geeft. Onze constitutie bouwt voort op Voermans’ eerdere boek Het verhaal van de grondwet (2019) waarin het verschijnsel grondwet wereldwijd werd bekeken. Dit vervolg richt zich exclusief op het Nederlandse constitutionele bestel. Wim Voermans is hoogleraar staatsrecht aan de Universiteit Leiden. Eerder publiceerde hij bij Prometheus samen met Geerten Waling De gemeente in de genen (2018) en zijn veelgeprezen Het verhaal van de grondwet (2019). ‘Op uiterst leesbare en vaak prikkelende wijze schetst Voermans de ontwikkeling van het constitutionele denken van de Oudheid tot nu.’ Historisch Nieuwsblad over Het verhaal van de grondwet
