Per 1 januari 2021 wordt de nieuwe versie (2021 versie) van deze Internationale statistische classificatie voor ziekten en met gezondheid verband houdende problemen – Tiende Revisie (ICD-10) in Nederland van kracht. De ICD-10 is een internationaal gehanteerde lijst van ziekten, onderhouden door de Wereldgezondheidsorganisatie. Het Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (RIVM) vertaalt en beheert deze lijst voor gebruik in Nederland vanuit de functie van WHO Collaborating Centre for the Family of International Classifications. De Nederlandse ICD-10 bestaat uit een set van 3 gebonden boeken: deel 1 is de systematische lijst, deel 2 is een handleiding voor het gebruik en deel 3 bevat de alfabetische lijst. Deze 2021-versie van de ICD-10 bevat alle correcties en updates die in de periode tussen 2014 en 2020 zijn doorgevoerd door de WHO. In deel 1 zijn rond de 300 coderingen aangepast. Ook de wijzigingen in deel 2 zijn omvangrijk; met name op het gebied van mortaliteitcodering. Uiteraard is ook deel 3 - de index - volledig geactualiseerd op basis van alle wijzigingen in deel 1. Nieuw in deze versie van de ICD-10 is de uitbreiding van de lijst met morfologische termen, dat wil zeggen: de lijst van morfologische termen (ICD-O) is bijgewerkt naar de meest recente versie (ICD-O-3.2). Voorheen verscheen de ICD-O-3 in een afzonderlijke uitgave. Tot slot zijn ook de meest recente WHO-coderingen rondom COVID-19 in deze nieuwe versie opgenomen. Opslaan, analyseren en vergelijken De ICD-10 wordt gebruikt om diagnoses van ziekten en andere gezondheidsproblemen in een unieke alfanumerieke code vast te leggen. Hierdoor wordt het mogelijk om ziekte- en sterftegegevens systematisch op te slaan, te analyseren, te interpreteren, te vergelijken en te aggregeren. Deze gegevens worden wereldwijd in verschillende landen of gebieden en in verschillende perioden verzameld en gebruikt voor zowel nationale als internationale statistieken. De ICD-10 is een belangrijk instrument voor medisch administrateurs in ziekenhuizen en andere particuliere en publieke instellingen in de gezondheidszorg. De ICD-10 is daarom onontbeerlijk voor een correcte registratie van de ICD-10 codes in de Nederlandse ziekenhuizen en wordt tevens gebruikt voor de Landelijke Basisregistratie Ziekenhuiszorg (LBZ).
