Advanced Medical Life Support is de vertaling van de nieuwste editie van het AMLS-programma, dat de nadruk legt op kritisch denken bij de patiëntbeoordeling en het opstellen van behandelplannen. Ook wordt steeds de toepassing benadrukt van de AMLS-pathway. Dit is een beoordelingsinstrument waarmee medische hulpverleners een spoedeisende somatische patiënt systematisch, snel en accuraat kunnen diagnosticeren. Daarbij staat een vroege interpretatie van de hoofdklacht of eerste presentatie van de patiënt centraal. De presentaties zijn gebaseerd op casuïstiek. Daardoor helpen ze studenten en docenten interactief te werken. De praktische benadering daagt studenten uit om hun kennis in realistische situaties toe te passen. De AMLS-cursus is geaccrediteerd door de Amerikaanse National Association of EMS Physicians en is aangepast aan de meest actuele medische kennis. Nieuw in deze uitgave is onder meer een overzichtshoofdstuk over het gebruik van medicatie in diverse spoedeisende situaties en een nieuw hoofdstuk over sepsis (en septische shock).
