Bij 5% van de volwassenen in Nederland komt ADHD voor, en bij ongeveer 20% van de psychiatrische en verslaafde patiënten. ADHD op volwassen leeftijd kan effectief worden behandeld, maar de stoornis wordt nog niet altijd herkend door professionals. ADHD bij volwassenen is geschreven voor studenten, arts-assistenten, psychologen, psychiaters, behandelaars en andere geïnteresseerden, om snel een overzicht te krijgen over de huidige stand van de wetenschap, en over de werkwijze bij diagnostiek en behandeling. In deze derde druk is het boek grondig herschreven en uitgebreid op basis van het laatste wetenschappelijk onderzoek. Behalve de diagnostiek worden de veelvoorkomende patronen van comorbiditeit besproken alsmede de differentiaal diagnostiek. Overlap in klachten en misdiagnostiek van chronische vermoeidheid bij meisjes en vrouwen met ADD wordt toegelicht. Nieuw is het hoofdstuk over de chronische slaapproblemen bij ADHD en de mogelijke consequenties voor de algemene gezondheid (obesitas, diabetes, cardiovasculaire ziekten en kanker). Ook nieuw zijn de paragrafen over ADHD en intelligentie, criminaliteit, seksualiteit, dyslexie en autisme. Toegevoegd zijn diagnostische instrumenten, zoals het gestructureerde Diagnostisch Interview voor ADHD bij volwassenen (DIVA), en een ultrakort en wat langer screeningsinstrument, alle op basis van de DSM-IV-criteria voor ADHD. Wat betreft de behandeling is er meer informatie over psycho-educatie en motivatie, en over individuele en groepscoaching. De langwerkende stimulantia en andere nieuwe medicijnen voor ADHD worden uitgebreid besproken, evenals de registratie en vergoeding. Er is een nieuw hoofdstuk over behandeling met melatonine voor de verlate slaapfase stoornis. Ten slotte is een hoofdstuk toegevoegd over de opzet en organisatie van een afdeling ADHD bij volwassenen met een multidisciplinair team. Referenties, websites en nuttige adressen zijn alle bijgewerkt. Dr. J.J. Sandra Kooij is psychiater en onderzoeker op het gebied van ADHD bij volwassenen. Zij is hoofd van Programma ADHD bij volwassenen van PsyQ in Den Haag, en van het gelijknamige Kenniscentrum.
