Dit boek voorziet hen in de kennis – gebaseerd op wetenschappelijke inzichten, praktijkervaring en persoonlijke ervaringen – om die aandoeningen en de invloed ervan op het leven te begrijpen. Psychische aandoeningen beschrijft eerst de verschillende manieren waarop psychische aandoeningen benaderd kunnen worden. Aan de orde komen: de medische benadering, de biopsychosociale benadering, het model van positieve gezondheid, de sociaalpsychiatrische benadering en de herstelbenadering. Ook de verschillende factoren die kunnen bijdragen aan het ontstaan van psychische aandoeningen worden beschreven. Vervolgens worden de meest voorkomende aandoeningen behandeld, waarbij steeds geprobeerd wordt het wezen van de aandoeningen weer te geven. Het beloop van de psychische aandoeningen is beschreven aan de hand van de fasen van herstelprocessen, waarbij ook de betekenis van een psychische aandoening voor het sociale netwerk van mensen wordt belicht. Elk hoofdstuk is verrijkt met een ervaringsverhaal om de unieke werkelijkheid en de impact van een psychische aandoening op iemands leven te illustreren. De inhoud van deze tweede druk is geheel herzien en geactualiseerd. Nieuw zijn een hoofdstuk over ADHD en een begrippenlijst achterin het boek. Op het online platform Boom Academie staat de theorie uit dit boek, afgewisseld met opdrachten, video’s en per hoofdstuk een multiplechoice-oefentoets. In het voortgangsoverzicht kunnen studenten hun resultaten bekijken. Voor docenten is een docentenhandleiding beschikbaar. Psychische aandoeningen is geschikt voor opleidingen in de domeinen zorg en welzijn. Arie Hordijk is docent Medische kennis en Psychiatrie aan de opleiding Social Work van de Christelijke Hogeschool Ede. Hij is opgeleid als arts. Will van Genugten was jarenlang als docent en coördinator van de richting ggz-agoog verbonden aan het Instituut Social Work van Hogeschool Utrecht. Zij is sociaal en cross-cultureel psycholoog.
