Uitgangspunt van behandeling is het systeemgerichte werken, waarbij niet enkel de individuele cliënt centraal staat, maar ook de context waarbinnen hij functioneert en de wederzijdse invloed die zij op elkaar hebben. Het belang van systeemgericht werken wordt in toenemende mate erkend binnen de brede hulpverlening. Sinds de transities in 2015 zijn ingevoerd, is er ook vanuit het overheidsbeleid aandacht voor. Het eerste deel van het boek behandelt de belangrijkste theoretische concepten en theorieën: wat is een systeem, de relevantie van communicatie en interactie, de belangrijkste theorieën en hun grondleggers. Nieuw in deze uitgave is de ruime aandacht voor de hedendaagse systeemgerichte methodieken – het narratief perspectief en het oplossingsgericht werken – voorzien van actuele casussen uit de praktijk van behandelaars en begeleiders. In het tweede deel staat de werkwijze centraal: de fases in systeemgerichte aanpak worden beschreven evenals een groot aantal interventies behorend bij deze methode van werken. Er is in deze druk specifiek aandacht besteed aan de systeemgerichte bouwstenen van een aantal practice based interventies. Het boek is primair gericht op hbo-opleidingen zoals Social Work en Pedagogiek. In het boek wordt gesproken van de social worker. Maar hiervoor in de plaats kan de lezer elke andere hulpverlener invullen die systeemgerichte hulp biedt: een ambulant hulpverlener en ambulant behandelaar, een sociaalpsychiatrisch verpleegkundige, een pedagoog of psycholoog, een jeugdbeschermer enzovoort. De combinatie van de theorie en de praktische toepassingen van het systeemgerichte werken maakt dat dit boek goed aansluit bij de huidige doelstellingen van het onderwijs. Daarnaast is het waardevol voor alle hulpverleners die systeemgerichte hulp bieden of willen bieden.
