Description

This book shows that in Asia and Europe, 17th- early 20th century, the history of "free" labour is linked to that of coerced labour. Circulation of models, peoples, goods and institutions, and long-term growth contributed to increase coercion. About the Author Alessandro Stanziani, Ph.D in history, Ph.D in Economics, is full professor at the EHESS and Senior Researcher at the CNRS (Paris). He has published about 100 articles and chapters and four monographies on Russian, European and the Indian Ocean history. Contributors include: Claude Chevaleyre (EHESS, Paris), Claude Markovits (CNRS, Paris), Simon F. Deakin (Cambridge University), Ulbe Bosma (IISG, Amsterdam), Gwyn Campbell (Mcgill University), Mary Louise Nagata (Francis Marion University), Pierre Vernus (University Lyon).
