Life in the Most Spectacular Part of Italy You’ve Never Heard Of Two Americans, by an unexpected act of generosity, are offered the chance to spend a summer in Agropoli, a beautiful seaside town in a part of Italy, the Cilento, they’ve never heard of, despite years of living and traveling in many parts of that country. What they find there astounds and delights them, and they contrive to live part-time there for the next fourteen years. What they discover in the course of research on several books is incredible: three UNESCO World heritage sites, including two Greek colonies, one with some of the best preserved Greek temples in the world, another the site of a famous philosophical and medical school, and a third site a huge Carthusian monastery; a score of gorgeous beach towns in a zone which has more Bandiera Blu awards for limpid waters than any other place in the world; dozens of evocative little mountain villages, the cores of which are Medieval gems; inexhaustible natural wonders in Italy’s second largest national park, the National Park of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano, and Alburni Mountains, with rafting, trekking, exotic flora, and wildlife reserves. Plus, layers and layers of history and culture: prehistoric, Iron Age, Italic, Greek, Roman, Paleo-Christian, and Medieval history, and food and wine so delicious and healthful that they prompted the discoverer of the benefits of the Mediterranean Diet to buy a villa and live there part-time the last 32 years of his long and happy life. All this in an area where the cost of living–or visiting–is dirt cheap for Americans, and there is no need to battle the hordes of tourists to see seascapes and mountain vistas every bit as stunning as those of Amalfi and Tuscany. Finally, there are the Cilentani themselves: a bit reserved at times, but warm, generous, and helpful. David L. (Dave) Thurmond earned a Ph.D. in classics from the University of Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the author of two books on ancient food technology and another on ancient Lucania. He and Sandy have also produced a book on mozzarella di bufala Campana. Sandra P. (Sandy) Thurmond is a former teacher who taught photography for many years and is an avid devotee of that art. She and Dave live in Durham, North Carolina.
