Si l'histoire de la collection de Josette et Jean-Claude Weill commence par la peinture, leur quête passionnée de formes nouvelles les conduit rapidement à embrasser l'infinie diversité des arts premiers. Mûrie, au fil des décennies, sous le regard enthousiaste de leur fils Jean-Pierre, leur collection compte aujourd'hui plus de 120 oeuvres de tout premier ordre, issues des arts d'Afrique, d'Océanie et des Amériques. Plusieurs grands ensembles se dessinent, reflétant l'inclination de la famille Weill pour les formes audacieuses et expressionnistes : statues dogon et tellem alliant formes géométriques et surfaces texturées, mais également figures de pouvoir kongo parées de leur charge magique. La collection fait en outre la part belle aux arts expressifs originaires du Nigeria, du Cameroun et de Mélanésie. Parmi les oeuvres les plus classiques se trouvent des pièces iconiques - telles que la statue bena lulua ayant appartenu à Jacques Kerchache, la figure de reliquaire fang d'Edward Robinson ou encore le puissant bouchon de flûte biwat de la collection Lemaire -, qui témoignent tant de la sûreté du goût des Weill que du regard affûté qu'ils ont su porter sur ces arts venus d'ailleurs. Microcosme dans la collection, un important groupe d'ivoires d'un très grand raffinement constitue le tiers des oeuvres rassemblées. Le présent ouvrage sera l'occasion de dévoiler cette collection parisienne nimbée de mystère, aussi remarquable que confidentielle. Editeur de la publication, Charles-Wesley Hourdé (expert et chercheur indépendant) a désiré mettre en lumière la richesse et la diversité de cet ensemble exceptionnel. Il s'est ainsi entouré d'auteurs prestigieux, dont les notices accompagneront chacun des objets. Parmi eux figurent notamment Viviane Baeke (Africa Museum, Tervuren), Philippe Dagen (historien et critique d'art), Jean-Paul Colleyn (anthropologue), Bertrand Goy (auteur spécialiste de la Côte d'Ivoire), Hélène Joubert (musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac), Hélène Leloup (historienne de l'art et antiquaire), Sean Mooney (The Rock Foundation, Houston) et Philippe Peltier (anciennement musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac). About the Author Charles-Wesley Hourdé est expert, marchand et chercheur indépendant spécialisé dans les arts classiques d’Afrique, d’Océanie et d’Amérique. Sa passion pour la genèse du marché l’a amené à publier plusieurs articles, en particulier sur l’ébéniste japonais Kichizô Inagaki, de même que six catalogues d’exposition, dont Passeurs de rêves (2016) qui s’intéresse à l’historique des objets extra-européens et L’Emprise des masques (2017) qui aborde les affinités qu’entretiennent certaines sculptures primitives avec les œuvres de Pablo Picasso. Sa dernière publication Galerie Pigalle : Afrique, Océanie, fruit de trois ans de recherche, a reçu le prix PILAT 2018.
