Cet ouvrage nous révèle la production artistique du vaste groupe des îles de l'archipel Bismarck, région des Mers du Sud située sur la ceinture de feu volcanique de la Mélanésie occidentale, divisée en quatre zones géographiques et culturelles principales : la Nouvelle-Irlande, la Nouvelle-Bretagne, les îles de l'Amirauté et les îles de l'Ouest. C'est un art fait de matériaux naturels comme la fibre végétale, les bois légers, le tissu d'écorce et le coeur des arbres. Cette fragilité associée à l'utilisation de couleurs vives a largement inspiré l'expressionnisme allemand et le surréalisme. L'Art de l'archipel Bismarck est divisé en trois parties principales : un premier essai sur les plus récentes explorations photographiques de Bart Van Bussel concernant les traditions culturelles et la danse traditionnelle en Nouvelle-Irlande et en Nouvelle-Angleterre aujourd'hui ; un second sur la période historique d'échanges et d'interactions du colonialisme allemand et, enfin, un troisième qui traite de l'histoire de l'art de la région et des interprétations culturelles des oeuvres illustrées. Les pièces reproduites, magnifiquement photographiées par Hughes Dubois, proviennent toutes de collections privées renommées du Bénélux.
