Questo terzo libro ospita una serie di metodiche di produzione di immagini positive per stampa a contatto da negativi, tra di loro chimicamente correlate per il meccanismo con cui si innesca il processo ossidoriduttivo che porta alla formazione finale dell’immagine. Il grilletto che accende la catena dei processi è invariabilmente un sale di Ferro, e per questo motivo si parla di processi ai Sali di Ferro o Siderotipie, dal greco σίδηρος, che significa appunto Ferro. Queste metodiche sono accomunate da molti caratteri comuni e val dunque la pena trattarle unitariamente, anche perché sono comuni anche alcuni aspetti di metodo. La qualità delle immagini, la raffinatezza dei dettagli e la lunga scala tonale, unita alla lunga persistenza archivistica di molte di queste tecniche sembrano contrastare con la loro semplicità esecutiva. Non servono abilità particolari o gestualità esperte, né attrezzature sofisticate, se non una sorgente di luce UV, che può comunque essere rimpiazzata dal sole per chi lo desideri. Ma si tratta di una semplicità solo apparente, che richiede una conoscenza esperta dei meccanismi chimico-fisici che ne stanno alla base, per poter ottenere risultati prevedibili e riproducibili. Per questo si è cercato di dare uno spazio adeguato alle questioni tecniche, perché possano essere governate con sufficiente padronanza. La loro storia testimonia tutto lo sforzo tecnologico che il XIX secolo ha intrapreso per risolvere il problema di ottenere stampe positive, migliori di quelle realizzate con la Carta Salata e l’Albumina. I miglioramenti riguardano sia aspetti tecnici (più persistenti) che estetici (più belle). Trattando della loro storia si pongono dunque a tema argomenti di significato estetico, semeiologico ma anche intrinseco ai determinanti specifici dei diversi processi, che sono gli stessi per i quali oggi questi processi sono ripresi e valorizzati. E questo è il motivo per cui anche la loro dimensione storica, semantica (e in ultima analisi culturale) ha uno spazio in questo libro per certi versi eccessivo in un semplice manuale. Ma proprio lo sviluppo recentissimo - perfezionamento e reinvenzione - di alcune di questi processi, aiuta a comprendere come le motivazioni culturali non siano indifferenti alla spinta tecnologica per la ricerca innovativa, in questo come in ogni altro campo della scienza, che è legata a doppio filo con la dimensione artistica dell’esistenza. E così gli aspetti di senso ridiventano indissolubili da quelli pratici e pragmatici, influenzandosi a vicenda, e rituffandoci nella dimensione alta del lavoro artigianale, che è un modo di tenere insieme mano, testa e cuore.
