Los años transcurridos desde la publicación por vez primera de esta obra no le han restado actualidad, «pues el papel de la religión en los Estados laicos es objeto de vehementes discusiones en los tiempos que corren, tanto en España como en Europa, y tras esos debates se esconde la cuestión más profunda de si un hombre moderno e ilustrado puede defender ante la razón, y en qué forma, la fe en Dios». Hans Küng elude tanto la ingenuidad fideísta (con Descartes) como el racionalismo ideológico (con Pascal), afrontando los retos del ateísmo moderno (Feuerbach, Marx y Freud) y del nihilismo posmoderno (Nietzsche). El resultado de ambos ha sido la puesta en cuestión de las certezas fundamentales: las relativas a la fe religiosa y las que conciernen a la consistencia y sentido de la realidad en general. Para Küng este resultado es irrefutable, pero, a la vez, no concluyente. «Sí a la realidad», como alternativa al nihilismo, desde una postura de confianza radical; «sí a Dios», como alternativa al ateísmo, desde una fe que trasciende la razón sin negarla; y «sí al Dios de la Biblia», al Dios de Jesucristo en particular, como fundamento de esa confianza radical: tales son las tres etapas básicas por las que Küng responde a la pregunta que da título a su obra.
