La época en la que Marcel Granet elaboró su obra sinológica es la del descubrimiento sociológico de China. Por ello, el acercamiento de Granet al pensamiento chino antiguo consiste en poner de relieve los principales temas y esquemas que estructuran el universo mental de los chinos, sus categorías fundamentales (el espacio, el tiempo, el Yin y el Yang, el Tao, los números) y las disciplinas en las que aquellas son tratadas (astronomía, filosofía, matemática), para acabar con un detenido análisis de las principales sectas y escuelas en cuestiones como el gobierno, el bien público o la santidad. La palabra clave de la sociología sinológica de Granet es «correspondencias»: «Dominado todo él por la idea de eficacia, el pensamiento chino se mueve en un mundo de símbolos hecho de correspondencias y de oposiciones que basta movilizar cuando se quiere actuar o comprender». Si sigue siendo cierto que «los chinos han conquistado con sus costumbres, con sus artes, con su escritura y con su sabiduría todo el Extremo Oriente», hay que convenir en que la obra de Granet guarda, para el lector de nuestros días, toda su importancia como llave para entender una cultura milenaria que vuelve a emerger en plena posmodernidad.
