Enfermería y medicina se solapan en muchas circunstancias en la emergencia. Dado el carácter a menudo fulminante de la emergencia, la actuación debe ser inmediata y del máximo nivel profesional posible. Por ello, en situaciones en las que el personal de enfermería no cuenta con el respaldo médico actuará de conforme a su conciencia, ética y buena fe en el territorio que proporcione al paciente el máximo beneficio. Los límites de tal territorio son imprecisos en estos casos y queda a criterio del personal de enfermería hasta donde llegar. Lo que está claro que no debe hacerse, es no aplicar un tratamiento comprobado o absolutamente necesario para el caso, por el hecho de que no haya sido prescrito por el médico; a modo de ejemplo, el uso de fármacos clave en un shock anafiláctico severo o en una PCR.
