Todo arranca de una situación que suena familiar: durante el reinado de Luis XIII, D¿Artagnan, un joven de provincias pobre y ambicioso, viaja a París para abrirse camino en la vida. Apenas llega, se ve envuelto en un torbellino de sucesos y conoce a los que serán sus fieles compañeros de andanzas: Porthos, Athos y Aramis. En Veinte años después, los mosqueteros han llegado a la cuarentena, se han dispersado y sirven en bandos distintos: unos están con Mazarino, otros con los sublevados de la Fronda. Sin embargo, siguen siendo fieles a la vieja amistad y juntos correrán de nuevo innumerables peligros y aventuras, tanto en Francia como en Inglaterra. El vizconde de Bragelonne nos sitúa diez años después, y nos presenta los días finales del cardenal Mazarino, siendo ya D¿Artagnan capitán de mosqueteros. El objetivo del ya no tan joven mosquetero, junto con sus fieles compañeros, es ahora llevar a Carlos II a recuperar el trono que su difunto padre perdió. Estas tres novelas forman el que sea probablemente el ciclo novelístico más famoso del siglo xix. Desde su publicación por entregas en 1844, se ha convertido en un icono de la novela de aventuras con trasfondo histórico. Incluso quienes no la han leído conocen muchas de sus escenas y a sus personajes principales, sobre todo a los tres mosqueteros, que finalmente son cuatro. La edición que ahora presentamos, en una traducción revisada a fondo en la que se han restituido textos omitidos en versiones anteriores, e incluye los grabados de la primera edición ilustrada de la obra. Ahora hay una nueva adaptación cinematográfica que se estrena en España el 30 de septiembre.
