La antigua “música” (el arte/la ciencia de las Musas) era una compleja estructura en la que el habla, la palabra, la voz, se concertaba con los movimientos corporales, así como con los instrumentos que ocasionalmente podían subrayar y apoyar el conjunto; constituía, así, un rico sistema de comunicación en una sociedad, que, según se entendía, reproducía en sí la propia entidad del ser humano y del universo entero, ambos (el micro- y el macrocosmos) regidos por un mismo principio, el número (arithmós, rhythmós), que, a fin de cuentas, se hacía perceptible, sensible, a través de dicha música. Parámetro importantísimo en ese sistema musical, las formas rítmico-métricas llevan en último término al corazón de aquella sociedad y resultan un instrumento eficaz para comprender la realidad humana de aquella cultura. El valor, por tanto, de dichas formas es incuestionable; su significación literaria, su eficacia para comprender cualquier género de expresión poética son evidentes. Es este el horizonte del presente libro, que pretende ofrecer una sencilla introducción a los versos latinos, abordándolos tanto en sentido diacrónico (origen, procedencia, evolución) como sincrónico (distribución en el sistema de cada época: en lo popular y en lo literario, en los distintos géneros) y funcional.
