Manuel Naranjo Martell’s new publication, Tarde de toros, is a journey to the heart of a profession deeply rooted in the photographer’s native land, bullfighting, and in one of the cathedrals of bullfighting: the bullring of the Real Maestranza de Caballería in Seville, which becomes a sort of laboratory where the author experiments with different techniques and influences. This book displays a very powerful work in black and white that has cinematographic reminiscences (among them, the shot-sequence that begins Martin Scorsese’s film Raging Bull) and of the masters of the Japanese school of photography, such as Daydo Moriyama.
