Product Description The volume evaluates major developments in psychiatry in India from the 1950s, and highlights the areas where Indian psychiatry has contributed to the development of the subject worldwide. The chapters review international as well as Indian developments in psychiatry and its sub-specialities. A wide range of clinical, research and policy-related topics have been covered in the volume, which begins with an overview of the history of psychiatry in India, moving on to developments in various sub-specialities of psychiatry in the last 60 years or so. It then specifically discusses developments in psychology and psychodynamics, general adult and child psychiatry, substance use psychiatry, community psychiatry, liaison psychiatry, and other psychiatric sub-specialities. Developments in treatment, the status of training and service in psychiatry and legal issues related to the practice of psychiatry in India are also included. The contributors to this volume are nationally and internationally recognized experts in different areas of psychiatry. Most of them have had some association, or are currently associated, with the Department of Psychiatry at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India. About the Author Savita Malhotra is Head of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Services at the Department of Psychiatry, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Educational and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, India. She is a recipient of the D.L.N. Murthy Rao Oration Award, Bhagwat Award, PPA 1 Award, Bombay Psychiatric Society Silver Jubilee Year Award of the Indian Psychiatric Society; Tilak Venkoba Rao Award of the Indian Council of Medical Research; and WHO Fellowship in Child Mental Health. She has also received the Dr K.L. Wig Oration Award of the National Academy of Medical Sciences. She is a Life Fellow of the Indian Association for Social Psychiatry and of the Indian Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health. Professor Malhotra has been actively involved with several national and international societies and organisations: Indian Association for Social Psychiatry (Past President); Indian Association for Child & Adolescent Mental Health (Life President); International Association for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions (Assistant Secretary General and Adjunct Secretary); Member and Consultant Education Committee of the World Psychiatric Association and Temporary Advisor, World Health Organisation, in the past. She is President Elect of the Asian Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions, and Board Member of the Child Psychiatry Section of WPA. She has published over 2
