The primary aim of ISEUSAM 2012 is to provide a platform to facilitate the discussion for a better understanding and management of uncertainty and risk, encompassing various aspects of safety and reliability of engineering systems. The conference received an overwhelming response from national as well as international scholars, experts and delegates from different parts of the world. More than two hundred authors have shown their interest in the symposium. The Proceedings presents ninety two high quality papers which address issues of uncertainty encompassing various fields of engineering, i.e. uncertainty analysis and modelling, structural reliability, geotechnical engineering, vibration control, earthquake engineering, environmental engineering, stochastic dynamics, transportation system, system identification and damage assessment, and infrastructure engineering. About the Author Prof. S. Chakraborty has been teaching in the Department of Civil Engineering of Bengal Engineering and Science University, India for 17 years. He has completed his Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from IIT Kharagpur in 1995. He is involved in numerous projects of Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. Prof. Chakraborty has been awarded Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering to recognize distinguished contributions to Engineering and also the Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers by the Alexander von Humboldt foundation to pursue advance research in seismic vulnerability analysis at RWTH Aachen Germany. He is also Managing Editor of International Journal of Engineering under Uncertainty: Hazards, Assessment, and Mitigation. Prof. Gautam Bhattacharya is a distinguished faculty member of Department of Civil Engineering at Bengal Engineering and Science University, India. His area of research is deterministic and probabilistic analysis of reinforced and unreinforced slopes, retaining structures and foundations and geotechnical earthquake engineering. He has published several scientific articles in peer reviewed journals and also authored books with CRC Press and Springer. He has won several awards including the prestigious Sir Biren Mookerjee Prize for proficiencies in various courses at the undergraduate level.
