O Tratamento por Aquífero no Solo (SAT) é uma tecnologia de baixo custo para o tratamento avançado e reutilização de águas residuais, que se realiza através da infiltração das águas residuais tratadas da superfície da bacia através do solo, seguindo um esquema operacional conhecido como ciclo de humedecimento e secagem ou padrão cíclico. Os sistemas SAT contribuem para resolver o problema da escassez de água doce através da recarga dos lençóis freáticos e também ajudam a resolver o problema do excedente de águas residuais tratadas. Assim, tem-se vindo a dar-se cada vez mais atenção à remoção das espécies de azoto significativas (amónia, nitrato e nitrito) das águas residuais tratadas durante o funcionamento do sistema SAT, a fim de prevenir a poluição das águas subterrâneas. Os efeitos de diferentes programas de humedecimento-secagem e o impacto de outros fatores no desempenho do sistema SAT utilizando diferentes tipos de solo foram estudados neste trabalho através da realização de experiências em colunas de solo.
