Die Weltgesundheitsorganisation stuft Durchfallerkrankungen als zweithäufigste Ursache (nach akuten Atemwegsinfektionen) für Morbidität und Mortalität bei Kindern in Entwicklungsländern ein. Entamoeba histolytica und Giardia lamblia sind zwei der weltweit wichtigsten und am weitesten verbreiteten parasitären Protozoen, die Durchfallerkrankungen verursachen. Metronidazol wird als Medikament der Wahl gegen Amöbiasis und Giardiasis eingesetzt. Wir wissen, dass Menschen seit mehreren tausend Jahren Heilpflanzen zur Behandlung von Krankheiten und Gesundheitsstörungen verwenden. Eine Alternative zu synthetischen Medikamenten ist die Suche nach antiparasitären Pflanzenextrakten oder daraus gewonnenen sekundären Metaboliten. Naturprodukte spielen nach wie vor eine wichtige Rolle in der Therapie: Zwischen 1981 und 2006 wurden 1.184 neue Medikamente zugelassen, von denen 28 % Naturprodukte oder deren Derivate waren. Weitere 24 % der neuen Medikamente enthielten Pharmakophore (d. h. funktionelle Gruppen mit pharmakologischer Aktivität), die aus Naturprodukten gewonnen wurden.
