In reality, however, it was led to take paths that simultaneously promoted a model of growth which, rather than ensuring its autonomy and independence, entangled it in a web that condemned it to remain dependent and subordinate; and, for some of its regions, the notion of inequality and backwardness became its defining characteristic.
