Der Zweck dieses Buches ist es, zu zeigen, wie ein Vorschlag für ein geeignetes Betreuungsmodell für HIV-positive Krankenschwestern zustande kam. Es handelte sich um einen Prozess, in dessen Anfangsphase HIV-positive Krankenschwestern ihren HIV-positiven Status geheim hielten, was sie dazu veranlasste, weit zu reisen, um Dienstleistungen für Menschen mit HIV in Anspruch zu nehmen, obwohl diese Dienstleistungen auch direkt vor ihrer Haustür, d. h. an ihrem Arbeitsplatz, angeboten wurden. Die Methodik der Grounded Theory ermöglichte die Untersuchung der Struktur und des Prozesses der Versorgung von HIV-positiven Pflegekräften in einem regionalen Krankenhaus. Die daraus resultierende Theorie, bekannt als „Journey into recognized care for HIV positive nurses" (Weg zur anerkannten Versorgung von HIV-positiven Pflegekräften), enthielt Strategien, die sich positiv auf die Praxis, Forschung und Politik auswirken könnten, indem sie dazu beitragen würden, die unzureichende Struktur und den unzureichenden Prozess der Versorgung von HIV-positiven Pflegekräften in einem ähnlichen Kontext zu verbessern.
