Elementy konstrukcyjne stosowane w budownictwie muszą być zaprojektowane tak, aby spełniały wymagania dotyczące parametrów mechanicznych, trwałości i odporności ogniowej. Głównymi atrybutami betonu o wysokiej wytrzymałości (HSC) są jego większa wytrzymałość mechaniczna i trwałość, cechy, które mają fundamentalne znaczenie dla wydajności budynku. Jednak biorąc pod uwagę jego niską porowatość, HRC ma niższą odporność ogniową w porównaniu z betonem o normalnej wytrzymałości (NRC), tj. jest bardziej podatny na pękanie, zwykle wybuchowe, odsłaniając zbrojenie konstrukcji. W tym celu przeprowadzono testy na próbkach cylindrycznych w piecach nagrzewanych do rosnących temperatur, w zakresie od 100 °C do 800 °C przy stałej szybkości nagrzewania 1 °C/min, pozostających w ustalonej temperaturze przez 60 minut, a następnie poddawanych stałej szybkości chłodzenia 1 °C/min.
