Le contexte de croissance de la ville de Londrina-PR, associé aux nouveaux aménagements de son organisation intra-urbaine au cours des dernières décennies, a suscité un intérêt pour la recherche sur le centre et son rôle dans le processus de décentralisation. D'une manière générale, les circonstances actuelles montrent que l'urbanisation a mis en évidence un processus tendant à complexifier son organisation spatiale, principalement à partir de la fin du XXe siècle. En ce sens, le centre-ville, qui se distinguait auparavant par sa présence unique, passe à une position articulée avec les autres centres, sa fonction ne se limitant plus à la centralité qui concentre les infrastructures, les flux et le secteur tertiaire. Ce centre, considéré comme le centre principal de la structure urbaine, assume également une fonction représentative de la ville, compte tenu de ses attributs : couverture sectorielle et territoriale, plus grande diversité d'activités, accessibilité, nodalité, sans oublier que le centre se révèle être un espace pluriel et difficile à dominer par les classes sociales, mais aussi le lieu des monuments, de l'histoire locale et de la concentration des valeurs symboliques.
