La menta siempre atrae por su frescura, su aroma y sus diferentes usos. En Marruecos, el uso diario de la menta para aromatizar el té o con fines culinarios o terapéuticos se ha convertido en una tradición nacional.La menta debe sus propiedades terapéuticas a los diversos metabolitos secundarios que contiene. Tanto si se consume directamente como si se añade a los alimentos, los principios activos presentes son una fuente importante de antioxidantes y antibióticos. La menta también se ha utilizado durante siglos como repelente de insectos y malas hierbas y como fumigante.El uso de la ciencia moderna para estudiar este conocimiento acumulado está confirmando gradualmente muchas de sus propiedades. Tres mentas muy utilizadas en Marruecos: M. pulegium (L.), M. suaveolens (Ehrh.) y M. spicata (L.) están siendo estudiadas para identificar sus aceites esenciales (AE), sus hidrolatos (HYD) y los metabolitos secundarios presentes en sus extractos, y para evaluar sus propiedades biológicas.
