Description

La caries infantil temprana (CIT), un tipo de caries dental muy extendido en niños menores de 71 meses, es una enfermedad crónica de la infancia con secuelas graves que afectan al niño y a la familia. Se trata de una enfermedad multifactorial, en cuya etiopatogenia están implicados como principales microorganismos S. mutans y Lactobacilli. La literatura reciente sugiere un probable papel de Candida, una especie fúngica comensal normal de la cavidad bucal, en su etiopatogenia. En determinadas condiciones fisiológicas o patológicas predisponentes, Candida es capaz de provocar patologías a través de un mecanismo infeccioso endógeno. En la primera infancia, debido a la inmadurez del sistema inmunitario y a que la microflora de la cavidad bucal no está completamente establecida, los niños son más susceptibles a la colonización microbiana oportunista. Este libro presenta un estudio transversal preescolar para determinar el recuento de Candida albicans, sus formas de existencia y su potencial acidogénico, y para correlacionar su papel con los niveles de Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguinis y lactobacilos en niños con ECC, S-ECC y sin caries.
