L'agrivoltaico è il duplice uso del terreno per la produzione di energia solare e per l'agricoltura. La tecnica è stata ideata per la prima volta da Adolf Goetzberger e Armin Zastrow nel 1981. Pannelli solari verticali, orientati da est a ovest, con moduli bifacciali vicino a Donaueschingen, in Germania. Molte attività agricole possono essere combinate con il solare, comprese le colture vegetali, il bestiame, le serre e le piante selvatiche per fornire supporto agli impollinatori. I sistemi agrovoltaici possono includere pannelli solari tra le colture, sopra le colture o sulle serre. I pannelli solari aiutano le piante a trattenere l'umidità e ad abbassare le temperature e possono fornire un riparo agli animali da allevamento. I pannelli solari bloccano la luce, il che significa che la progettazione di sistemi a doppio uso può richiedere compromessi tra l'ottimizzazione della resa delle colture, la qualità delle stesse e la produzione di energia.
