Niniejszy artykuł opisuje konteksty powstawania struktur tematycznych i fokusowych w klasycznym języku portugalskim. Badamy zachowania językowe portugalskich autorów urodzonych między XVI a XIX wiekiem. Wynik naszego badania definiuje gramatykę V2 w licencjonowaniu tych konstrukcji. Wynik pokazuje również, że pozycja realizacji klityk jest silnie skorelowana z pozycją zajmowaną przez topikalizowaną syntagmę w CP. Biorąc pod uwagę efekty V2, które pojawiają się w tworzeniu tych konstrukcji, zakładamy, że klasyczny portugalski jest gramatyką V2. Jako hipotezę roboczą proponujemy, że czasownik skończony przesuwa się do jądra Fin w zdaniach głównych i podrzędnych tej gramatyki. Z drugiej strony, badania te pokazują, że istnieją zmiany w częstotliwości użycia i w konfiguracjach strukturalnych tych konstrukcji od XVIII wieku. Zakładamy, że zmiany strukturalne są wywoływane przez nową gramatykę używaną w języku w tym okresie historycznym. Wyniki naszych badań pozwalają nam przedstawić czynniki składniowe i prozodyczne, które motywują zmiany gramatyczne.
