Description

It is often emphasised by coaches that scientific preparation of athletes includes participating in well-organised events. Many people do not plan to fail, but fail to plan. In her Masters degree at the Central University of Technology, Free State the author focused on key steps to plan and organise successful track and field events in terms of event sub-systems and IAAF standards. Many incidents of ineffective management in events have been reported where unprofessional, un-qualified track and field event managers caused major disappointment at events. Unsuccessful event managers seem unfamiliar with scientific principles in event planning and management. This book aims to provide a comprehensive track and field event planning and management framework based on IAAF standards. The book emphasises the pre-planning phase of events and the application of the pre-planning actions in using checklists that have been compiled and described. Track and field event managers’ inability to interpret the existing checklists is illustrated through examples. The book focuses on track and field events, but it could also serve as a useful tool in planning any other sporting event.
