La gestión del crecimiento urbano extensivo ha sido históricamente objeto de numerosas intervenciones gubernamentales que se han traducido en instrumentos de política urbana. En algunos casos, estos instrumentos han tomado la forma de límites físicos, reforzando o creando diferenciaciones dentro y fuera de la ciudad. A lo largo de la década de 2000, en la ciudad de Río de Janeiro se utilizó en varias ocasiones la noción de ecolímites como instrumento para gestionar el crecimiento urbano dentro de la ciudad. Se trataba de límites físicos que debían situarse en el contacto entre las favelas y las áreas de preservación ambiental. Desde el punto de vista geográfico, es interesante investigar cómo se producen estos límites, material y simbólicamente, y qué categorías espaciales se movilizan en las políticas de contención del crecimiento urbano y cómo se construyen sus interfaces. Analizada como proceso, la política de ecolímites moviliza diversas categorías espaciales según los diferentes agentes, documentos y momentos aquí considerados y se constituye como un dispositivo de hacer y deshacer interfaces.
