Der Zusammenbruch des Kommunismus in Rumänien im Dezember 1989 leitete eine neue Periode in der Geschichte des Landes ein, die sich sowohl auf das öffentliche Gedächtnis als auch auf die Geschichtsschreibung auswirken sollte. Die rumänische Geschichte musste umgeschrieben oder neu interpretiert werden, wobei die Missbräuche, die Verfolgung und die Verbrechen des kommunistischen Regimes während der letzten 45 Jahre ans Licht kamen. Mehrere Publikationen und Massenmedien übernahmen die Aufgabe, die historische Wahrheit für das rumänische Volk wiederherzustellen. Viele Jahre nach dem Regimewechsel von 1990 wurde jedoch wenig getan, um die Zeit vor der kommunistischen Herrschaft aufzuarbeiten, die durch die pro-faschistische Diktatur von Marschall Antonescu gekennzeichnet war, eine Zeit, in der die Führung des Landes für den Tod von Hunderttausenden rumänischen und ukrainischen Juden verantwortlich war. Die Ideologen des rumänischen Nationalkommunismus weigerten sich, zwischen dem Einzelnen und der Nation als Ganzes zu unterscheiden, und zogen es vor, über den "vergessenen Holocaust" zu schweigen, als hätte es ihn nie gegeben.
