Heidnische Sagen sind für viele slawische Stämme typisch, während die in diesem Buch erwähnten volkstümlichen Legenden nur für die Regionen Weißrusslands typisch sind. Die heidnische Mythologie entstand mehrere Jahrhunderte vor Christus. Die volkstümliche Mythologie entstand, nachdem das Christentum Fuß gefasst hatte. Sie entstand auf den Ruinen der heidnischen Mythen und erhielt eine nationale Identität. Die Publikation ist eine Enzyklopädie, in der die populären Figuren der alten Sagen und Legenden systematisiert, ihre komplexen Beziehungen strukturiert und ihre Entsprechungen in der Mythologie anderer Völker aufgezeigt werden. In dem Bestreben, die Vorstellung von der Mythologie der alten Belarussen so genau wie möglich wiederzugeben, stützte sich der Autor auf die Werke von Wissenschaftlern, Epen, ethnographische Aufzeichnungen, Quellentexte aus der vedischen Tradition. Das Buch ist für einen breiten Leserkreis bestimmt.
