L'ottimizzazione della forma del dente è sempre stata il "santo graal" dell'odontoiatria restaurativa. Ricreare l'anatomia del dente mancante è importante non solo per sostituire la struttura perduta, ma anche per ristabilire la forma e la funzione ideali. La natura ha fatto del suo meglio nel creare una disposizione anatomica per evitare problemi. Al dentista non resta che assistere la natura copiando al meglio la disposizione così fornita, quando tenta di realizzare le otturazioni sulle superfici prossimali. La posizione dei contatti e dei contorni, la suscettibilità alla carie, il trattamento e il ruolo nell'odontoiatria preventiva sono stati presi in considerazione nella teoria e nella pratica per secoli. Il concetto precedente di trattamento della carie prossimale consisteva nel rimuovere la carie e riempire la cavità con materiali appropriati, senza considerare la forma e la funzione del dente. Per produrre un'otturazione sagomata, Atkinson et al. hanno introdotto il concetto di matrice. Il matricing è il processo di sostituzione della struttura dentale persa durante la preparazione mediante la costruzione di una parete temporanea che si oppone alle pareti assiali della preparazione.
