La hepatología es una rama de la medicina que se ocupa del estudio, la prevención, el diagnóstico y el tratamiento de las enfermedades que afectan al hígado, la vesícula biliar, el árbol biliar y el páncreas. El término hepatología deriva de las palabras griegas "hepatikos" y "logia", que significan hígado y estudio, respectivamente. La hepatitis afecta a millones de personas en todo el mundo y se asocia a varios desenlaces clínicos adversos, como el trasplante de hígado y el cáncer de hígado. En concreto, la hepatitis B y la hepatitis C son las principales causas de cáncer de hígado, mientras que el abuso del alcohol se ha relacionado con afecciones como la cirrosis y otras complicaciones graves. Más de 2.000 millones de personas han contraído la hepatitis B en algún momento y unos 350 millones son portadores persistentes. Gracias a la vacunación generalizada y a los análisis de sangre, la incidencia de la hepatitis B ha disminuido considerablemente. Sin embargo, la hepatitis B y la hepatitis C son responsables de hasta el 80% de los casos de cáncer de hígado. Además de estos tipos de hepatitis, las principales afecciones con las que tratan los hepatólogos son las hepatitis víricas y las enfermedades hepáticas relacionadas con el alcohol.
