Al final de su Fenomenología de la percepción (1945), Merleau-Ponty estableció con razón que el hombre es un ser de relaciones. El mundo en que vivimos no existe en términos absolutos, en el sentido de que sería el resultado de una serie de operaciones destinadas a despojarlo de sus imperfecciones, o de que se trata de un mundo informado y caótico al que habría que dar una forma y organizarlo, es decir, uniformarlo para que responda a una racionalidad incontestable. También significa que el hombre no existe en la pureza de un ser. Como corporeidad viviente, tiene acceso a un mundo en permanente realización, ya ahí, lleno de vida, que para él no es un obstáculo ni una simple yuxtaposición de ideas. Lo descubrimos a través de nuestra historia, nuestra cultura, nuestra condición social y, sobre todo, a través de nuestra vida afectiva. El hombre siempre está en contacto con el mundo exterior. Y todo indica que carece de sentido si tratamos de definirlo por sí mismo, de percibirlo más bien y únicamente desde dentro. Al hacerlo, corremos el riesgo de no ver ni comprender cómo sale de sí mismo al mundo, si no es por un decreto arbitrario.
