È la decima più grande delle ventisei province della Repubblica Democratica del Congo e la più grande delle cinque province del Grande Kasai. Amministrativamente, la provincia di Sankuru comprende sei territori, quarantatré settori e quattrocentodiciotto raggruppamenti. Ha una rete idrografica costituita da numerosi fiumi pescosi, tra cui il Lomami, il Sankuru, il Lokenye, il Lomela e il Lubefu, parzialmente navigabili e con diverse infrastrutture portuali, la maggior parte delle quali costruite durante il periodo coloniale.
