Ce mémoire s'inscrit dans le champ de la littérature romane française du XIXe siècle. Ce siècle est caractérisé par de nombreux changements sociaux ; donnant notamment le domaine de l'expression de l'amour Les relations sentimentales s'articulent désormais autour d'intérêts égoïstes et pécuniaires ; parfois, ou consciemment orientées vers la recherche d'une ascension sociale. Les personnages de romans, incarnations de l'esprit du siècle, se projettent dans la relation sentimentale en subvertissant toutes les valeurs sociales, morales, humaines. Seule la place qu'occupe le niveau de richesses – valeurs de la dot, projection sociopolitique et richesses matérielles en constituant les référents-cultes. Les mœurs se fanent, l'éthique du mariage s'étiole et l'amour fini par se réduire en peau de chagrin ; donner une forme d’avertissement concernant les résidus. Voici la quête de cette étude qui s'efforcere de peindre la pratique du sentiment amoureux et ses divers dérivés à travers l'analyse de La Chartreuse de Parme (Stendhal), La Curée (Emile Zola) et Indiana (George Sand).
