L'État du Pará est l'un des plus grands producteurs de substances minérales du pays ; par conséquent, l'activité minière génère de nombreux déchets qui, en raison de leurs caractéristiques physiques, chimiques et minéralogiques, pourraient être utilisés avec succès comme matière première pour la fabrication de matériaux de construction. Les industries de traitement des revêtements de kaolin et de production d'alumine sont particulièrement intéressantes. Les entreprises de traitement du kaolin ont déjà produit environ 5 millions de tonnes de déchets composés de kaolinite extrêmement fine (RBC), une matière première prometteuse pour la fabrication de métakaolinite hautement réactive. L'industrie de production d'alumine est responsable de la production de boue rouge (RL), un déchet du procédé Bayer, composé d'oxydes et d'hydroxydes de fer et d'aluminium, dont environ 9 millions de tonnes ont déjà été rejetées dans l'environnement. Son principal inconvénient est la grande quantité de sodium soluble. L'objectif de cette étude était de donner une destination finale à ces deux déchets, plutôt que de les éliminer. La faisabilité technique de la production d'un nouveau type de matériau de construction a été évaluée : le pigment pouzzolanique, basé sur un mélange de calcine et de sodium.
