Tras el primer volumen, dedicado al estudio de las "figuras actanciales de la decadencia" en las novelas del escritor neorrealista portugués Carlos de Oliveira: Casa na Duna, 1942, Pequenos Burgueses, 1948, Uma Abelha na Chuva, 1953 y Finisterra, 1978; este segundo volumen, titulado "figuras espaciotemporales de la decadencia", adopta un enfoque semiótico y epistemológico de los rostros del tiempo y del espacio. El autor explora los signos de la decadencia humana con un aparato teórico basado en el psicoanálisis (Gaston Bachelard), la psicocrítica (Charles Mauron), la geopoética (Michel Collot) y la geocrítica (Christine Baron). Se analiza minuciosamente el espacio rural de la Gândara, un escenario lunar donde la humanidad se debate cerca del caos. El tiempo cronológico es considerado en su inexorable evolución hacia la decadencia o en el conservadurismo fosilizante que inspira en la pequeña burguesía. Microcosmos de la sociedad portuguesa de la época de la dictadura de Salazar, el círculo doméstico está simbolizado por pantanos que fermentan y ofrecen después los rostros atribulados de la metamorfosis hacia la muerte.
