Impfstoffe unterscheiden sich von anderen Medikamenten in zwei wichtigen Punkten. Erstens sollen sie Krankheiten vorbeugen, anstatt sie zu behandeln. Sie bewirken dies, indem sie das Immunsystem einer Person darauf vorbereiten, bestimmte krankheitsverursachende Bakterien, Viren oder andere Erreger zu erkennen. Dieses "Gedächtnis" kann jahrelang, in manchen Fällen sogar lebenslang, bestehen bleiben, weshalb die Impfung so wirksam sein kann, da sie verhindert, dass Menschen krank werden, anstatt zu warten, bis eine Krankheit auftritt. Zweitens sind Impfstoffe von Natur aus eher biologische als chemische Produkte wie die meisten Arzneimittel. Das bedeutet nicht nur, dass die Verfahren zu ihrer Herstellung in der Regel komplexer und teurer sind, sondern auch, dass sie in der Regel weniger stabil sind als chemische Produkte und anfälliger für Temperaturschwankungen. Aus diesem Grund müssen Impfstoffe normalerweise gekühlt werden, um sie innerhalb eines bestimmten Temperaturbereichs zu halten. Die Art des Impfstoffs bestimmt, bei welcher Temperatur der Impfstoff gelagert werden muss. Die meisten Impfstoffe müssen gekühlt oder gefroren aufbewahrt werden, aber es werden inzwischen auch intranasale Impfstoffe entwickelt, die bei Raumtemperatur gelagert werden können.
