Gli edifici odierni sono responsabili di circa il 40% della domanda globale di energia. Per ridurre il consumo energetico utilizzando i metodi di valutazione energetica (EA), le fasi iniziali della progettazione architettonica (EADS) sono particolarmente adatte per attuare le migliori misure in termini di costi-benefici. Per integrare l'EA nelle EADS, è necessario affrontare contemporaneamente due sfide principali: (a) la (dis)facilità dei modelli computazionali e (b) l'affidabilità dei risultati. Per raggiungere entrambi gli obiettivi viene presentato un Framework for Energy Assessment Tools in Early Architectural Design Stages (FORwArDS) e una metodologia di validazione, Relative Validation (RV). I risultati vengono presentati, analizzati e si traggono conclusioni sui contributi del framework e della metodologia di validazione al miglioramento dell'EADS. La struttura aperta del framework e l'applicabilità della metodologia di validazione a qualsiasi simulazione contribuiscono alla discussione sui problemi di integrazione della valutazione energetica nell'EADS e presentano strumenti utili per la creazione e il test di metodologie di semplificazione dei modelli e di EA per gli architetti durante l'EADS.
