Neben dem Vorteil, nützliche Muster zu extrahieren, birgt es auch die Gefahr, dass sensible Informationen des Benutzers preisgegeben werden. Wir können die sensiblen Informationen des Benutzers verbergen, indem wir Privacy Preservation Data Mining (PPDM) verwenden. Im Data Mining ist das Assoziationsregel-Mining eine beliebte und gut erforschte Methode zur Entdeckung interessanter Beziehungen zwischen Variablen in großen Datenbanken. Da Assoziationsregeln ein Schlüsselwerkzeug für die Suche nach solchen Mustern sind, können bestimmte Assoziationsregeln als sensibel eingestuft werden, wenn ihr Offenlegungsrisiko über einem bestimmten Schwellenwert liegt. Die meisten Data-Mining-Ansätze zur Wahrung der Privatsphäre verwenden Unterstützung und Vertrauen. Der Autor dieses Buches schlägt einen korrelationsbasierten Ansatz vor, der andere Maßstäbe als Support und Konfidenz verwendet, wie z. B. die Korrelation zwischen Elementen in sensiblen Itemsets, um die sensiblen häufigen Itemsets zu verbergen. Spalten im Datensatz, die einen bestimmten Korrelationsschwellenwert aufweisen, werden für den Ausblendungsprozess berücksichtigt. Dieser Mechanismus wird als Pearson-Korrelationskoeffizienten-Wägungsmechanismus bezeichnet, der den Kompromiss zwischen Privatsphäre und Genauigkeit aufrechterhält.
