Dando sentido y valor a la vida humana, la libertad se postula como el primero de todos los bienes, y condición para la realización y autorrealización del Ser. Es un requisito, por un lado, y un derecho inalienable, por otro. Así, en El contrato social, Jean Jacques Rousseau, buscando las bases de una autoridad legítima entre los hombres, define las condiciones en las que el hombre puede someterse a una autoridad política sin perder nada de su libertad. Porque, afirma: "renunciar a la propia libertad es renunciar a la propia calidad de hombre, o más bien a los derechos y deberes de la humanidad. Por eso la gente a veces prefiere la muerte a una existencia privada de libertad". Esta tesis del filósofo francés muestra la imposibilidad lógica de que el hombre sea desposeído de su libertad y sus poderes.
