Esta guía aporta nuevos datos sobre la biodiversidad de Argelia a través de la flora y la vegetación de las estepas y el Sáhara. Al proponer una tipología fitosociológica, constituye el eslabón de una cadena que permitirá elaborar un sistema de la vegetación argelina. Debido a la diversidad de sus ecosistemas, el Sáhara no puede asociarse a un "desierto": la "vida vegetal" está presente en hábitats ecológicos (reg, hamada, erg, oued, sebkhas, adrars) donde la frecuencia de taxones arborescentes o arbustivos es notable: cerca del 50% de los árboles y arbustos de Argelia están catalogados. En el Sáhara, los árboles tienen un valor inestimable: tarout, b'tom, argán y muchas otras especies son testigos de las vicisitudes paleoclimáticas que han afectado al Sáhara desde la era Terciaria. La población depende en gran medida de la flora y la vegetación, que siguen proporcionando una amplia gama de servicios ecosistémicos esenciales para sus necesidades en términos de alimentación, cuidados, refugio, combustible, forraje para los numerosos rebaños de ovejas y cabras, etc.
